Candle Care & Safety

A few minutes of care on the first burn decides how the whole candle performs. Here's how to get the most out of yours.

The first burn matters most

Wax has a memory. The first time you light the candle, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edge of the tin. That takes about two hours for most sizes. If you blow it out early, the candle will tunnel straight down on every burn after that, leaving wasted wax on the sides.

Every time you light it

  1. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch (6 mm) before each light. A long wick smokes, soots the tin and burns too hot.
  2. Burn no more than 4 hours at a time. Then let it cool for at least 2 hours before relighting.
  3. Keep it out of drafts, such as open windows, fans and vents. Drafts cause uneven burning, flickering and soot.
  4. Stop at 1/2 inch (13 mm) of wax left in the bottom of the tin. Burning past that can overheat the tin and the surface under it.

About the saffron threads

The threads are set into the wax by hand, so every tin is different. As the pool melts you'll see them suspended in it. Threads near the wick may darken as the candle burns. That's normal. If a thread drifts against the wick or the flame, put the candle out, let it cool, and lift the thread out before relighting.

Putting it out

Use a snuffer, or dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it back up. Both stop the smoke you get from blowing a candle out. Put the lid on only after the wax has fully set.

When it's finished

Once you reach the last 1/2 inch, stop burning. Put the tin in the freezer for a few hours and the leftover wax will pop out. Wash the tin with warm, soapy water and reuse it.

Safety

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Burn within sight. Keep away from things that can catch fire.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface. The tin gets hot while burning.
  • Don't move the candle while it's lit or while the wax is liquid.
  • Extinguish if the flame becomes too high, flickers repeatedly, or smokes. Let it cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before relighting.
  • The saffron in our candles is for fragrance and appearance only. Do not eat the wax or the threads.
